About Rowan Kinver

Author. Storyteller. Creator of original worlds.

Rowan Kinver's work is built around a simple belief: a good story should feel like a place you can enter.

The storyteller

As the founder of Kinver Studios, Rowan develops original stories and intellectual properties across literature, audio, and visual media, with a particular focus on fantasy, mythology, character-driven storytelling, and immersive worldbuilding.

The work is not limited to telling a single story. It is about building worlds large enough to contain many of them.

Skaldenreach

At the heart of the work is Skaldenreach, an original fantasy universe of interconnected cultures, histories, mythology, magic, and characters whose lives exist beyond the boundaries of any one story. Rather than treating a fictional world as a backdrop, Rowan approaches it as something living: a place with its own history, beliefs, conflicts, languages, and traditions.

The Mosswyn Hollow novels form one of the central narrative threads within that universe. The series follows characters growing up in a world larger and stranger than they first understand, and turns on identity, friendship, belonging, responsibility, and the consequences of discovering that the world you thought you knew is only a small part of something much greater.

Influences

Rowan's storytelling draws on mythology, folklore, adventure fiction, theatre, animation, and musical storytelling.

Among the influences: Rick Riordan, whose work showed how ancient mythology could become contemporary, character-driven adventure; John Flanagan, for grounded adventure and the relationships between characters; and Disney's The Lion King and Hercules, which showed how myth, music, humour, emotion, and larger-than-life characters can share a single story.

He is also drawn to contemporary theatrical and musical storytellers such as Jorge Rivera-Herrans, and to performers such as Dan Stevens, whose work shows the expressive range of voice and performance. The common thread is storytelling that does not simply describe a world, but performs it.

Sound as a language

That philosophy is clearest in Tales from the Skald, an audio anthology set within Skaldenreach and presented as stories told by a wandering Skald beside a campfire. It leans on theatre of the mind: voice, music, sound design, atmosphere, and performance, letting the audience build the world in their own imagination.

A voice establishes a personality. A shift in ambience moves the listener somewhere else. Footsteps suggest a space that is never shown. Music carries emotion that dialogue cannot. The listener is not watching the story happen; they are imagining it happening.

On the first episode, A Fool's Errand, Rowan worked as writer, director, producer, voice actor, editor, sound designer, mixer, and mastering engineer, carrying the story from script to finished release. It reflects a broader habit: learning the tools needed to realise an idea rather than waiting for someone else to build it.

People first

For all its mythology, magic, and sprawling history, the storytelling begins with characters. People who are frightened. People who want to belong. People who want to leave home. People who discover that the stories they were told about their world are incomplete. The fantastical exists to make those human experiences larger, not to replace them.

Rowan is particularly interested in the relationship between myth and memory: how stories change as they pass from one person to another, how cultures interpret the same events differently, and how legends preserve truths that history forgets. Each tale in Tales from the Skald can stand on its own, but each adds another fragment to the world. Over time, the fragments connect.

The world is the story. The stories are the pieces.

Currently

Through Kinver Studios, Rowan is building toward a larger transmedia body of work in which literature, audio, film, animation, and other forms can coexist without being tied to a single medium. The goal is not to adapt one story over and over, but to let each form reveal a different part of a world.

Right now that means writing the Mosswyn Hollow novels, producing new episodes of Tales from the Skald, drafting a short story, and working on Echoes for the Unborn.
